4 firms team up to boost Japanese food exports to Thailand

BANGKOK, NNA - The operator of Bangkok Tokyu Department Store, Yamato Global Logistics Japan Co. and two other firms have teamed up to boost Japanese agricultural and fishery exports to Thailand amid the growing popularity of Japanese food among locals.

The four firms will collaborate to provide integrated services from trade to transport and retail from Japan to Southeast Asia's second largest economy, helping Japanese farmers and fishermen sell their products at Bangkok Tokyu Department Store's "Paradise Park" shopping mall.

Many Japanese producers are unfamiliar with export procedures and overseas marketing although they face shrinking domestic markets due to the declining population.

The companies involved in the project are PT Retail Corp., a joint venture between the Tokyu Department Store group and local shopping mall operator MBK Public Co., Yamato Global Logistics, Lives Inc., a Tokyo-based company assisting exports mainly to Asia, and Mediator Co., a Bangkok-based consulting firm for marketing and sales channel development.

The project is intended to help solve a lack of expertise in trade among farmers and fishermen by providing them with an integrated service platform.

"47 Fresh From Japan," a specialized corner for Japanese food products at Paradise Park in eastern Bangkok, opened late last month. Fruits and fresh foods popular among Thais are mainly displayed at the corner, Takashi Seike, CEO of Lives, told NNA.

Lives "procures what Thais want from Japan and fully promotes the brand of each producing area," Seike said, adding that some farmers in the northern Japan prefecture of Aomori, known for various species of apples, will trade the fruit via the new channel.

Yamato Global Logistics is considering offering a home delivery service for Japanese products to Thai consumers while launching an online shopping site on the back of growing e-commerce in Thailand. (NNA/Kyodo)
